Small Spreading Pogonia is a member of the Orchid family. It is also known as Rosebud Orchid.
There are two members of the Cleistes genus in North America, bifaria and divaricata.
In the past the two have been considered varieties of the same species: Cleistes divaricata, so
older books, and some not so old, list it under that name. It has also been known
as Pogonia bifaria, and that name is still in use, hence my listing two scientific names.
Small Spreading Pogonia is quite uncommon in the Mobile area. It is found in marshy terrrain or along wet ditches. These plants were photographed along Bayou Heron Road, in the Grand Bay National Wildlife Refuge, in late April. |
