Everlasting is also known as Purple Cudweed, Catsfoot, and Spoonleaf. It is very common in lawns, gardens, roadsides: just about everywhere. Everlasting is a member of the Aster family. These plants were photographed in a neglected corner of my garden in Mobile, Alabama, in late January.

Note the two scientific names for this plant. Everlasting was known as Gnaphalium purpureum from the time of Carolus Linnaeus (1753) until the last decade. Now it has been determined that the North American species is the same as plants occurring in other parts of the world, and therefore should bear the same name: Gamochaeta purpurea.
