Heartleaf, also known as Little Brown Jug, grows in rich moist soils, usually under hardwoods. It is rare in Mobile County. In Spanish Fort, Alabama, it is common in forested areas along the bluff. When crushed, the leaves have a distinct smell of ginger. The flowers are usually hidden under the leaves and detritus of the forest floor. The leaves are present all year. These flowers were photographed in March.

Aristolochiaceae - Birthwort family
