Pale Meadow Beauty is common in the Mobile area. It prefers wet soils such as ditches and marshes, but is also found in dry areas. Note the urn shaped capsule (hypanthium) at the base of the flower. This structure found in all of our Meadow Beauties: it remains on the plant after the flowers and leaves are gone. These plants were photographed near Shipyard Road, in South Mobile County, Alabama, in May.

Melastomataceae - Meadowbeauty family
