Common Meadow Beauty, or Handsome Harry, is common in the Mobile area. It prefers wet soils, but is not confined to them. Note the urn shaped capsule (hypanthium) at the base of the flower. This structure is found in all of our Meadow Beauties: it remains on the plant after the flowers and leaves are gone. This plant was photographed near Shipyard Road, in South Mobile County, Alabama, in May.

Melastomataceae - Meadowbeauty family
