Early Blue Violet is not any earlier than Common Blue Violet. The palmata in the scientific name
refers to the palmate shape of some of the leaves. Violets, more than most other genera of North American plants,
have suffered from confusion of species. For decades species have been separated and combined by taxonomists.
In old references this plant may be called Viola triloba, Viola stoneana, or Viola falcata.
Early Blue Violet is uncommon in the Mobile Area. It tends to be found in dry piney woods. These plants were photographed near Rabbit Creek, in south Mobile County, in early March. |
